The following clip shows some fact that even when we think we speak perfect English, others might still not understand what we are talking about. It is closely related to different accents in which people speak English. The teacher can challenge students whether they can understand what the Iraqi man are saying without reading the subtitles. If they can, then ask why the TV station puts subtitles for him (but don't expect serious answers from this!).

The following clip can be really useful as a lead in to the first lesson of elementary 4 which discusses languages. The clip is very funny, but more importantly it shows what someone can achieve if they can speak more than one languages. And for the first meeting of the level, it can be a very good motivator for students to learn English well.

Pre-int 3 lesson 12 discusses about giving advice in the context of a job interview. The following clips give additional ideas of doing a successful interview which can be used to practice the functional language point. Teachers can ask students to write all the tips from either one of the clips and ask them to use the tips to make advice by using the target language.

The topic for pre-elementary lesson 9 is jobs. The following clip can add more vocabulary to the book's rather limited names of jobs. The short dialogues in the clip are very simple, so to suit the level. Teachers can prepare some questions before class asking about the people's names in the clip and their jobs.

In lesson 13, pre-int 4's grammar point is prepositions of movement. This simple language point is perfectly and interestingly demonstrate by the video clip below. Because of the simplicity of the material, this clip can also be used for lower levels of elementary. Lesson plan, handout and strips can be accessed in here.

Pre-int 2 lesson 12 uses Newcastle in England as the scene for the language inputs of the lesson. This lesson does not really discuss Newcastle in particular, but rather gives more attention to the language of giving directions. Yet the clip below can give better additional information about the city than the short reading text that the book provides. It also gives clearer description of what the city is like which can be very useful for students to compare it with other cities they know.

The topic of wedding is discussed in pre-int 2, lesson 14 Wedding bells. There is a speaking task in the book which asks students to describe a wedding ceremony they know. This clip is to provide students with a good model of how to describe a traditional wedding ceremony. Teachers can prepare some questions about the clip prior to the lesson.

Global Issues

Global issues are discussed in pre-int 4, lesson 16. The speaking and vocabulary sections from the book provide some current issues the world is dealing with. However, the listening activity does not really discuss the topic. It merely contains some trivial discussions from some people, which are supposed to relate to the issues.

The clip below can be a more useful and engaging alternative to be used in class because it shows not only the problems the world is facing, but also the suggestions to overcome the problems. Students will concentrate more on the issues they are discussing and find the best possible solution for the problems. The teacher can ask students to work in groups to discuss them.

Pre-int 4, lesson 15 discusses about varieties of Englishes round the world. The reading text gives a clear description of the differences. But, very few students can really notice the differences of the accents people have or use when they speak in English. The following clips provide excellent models of some of the accents discussed in the text, and other hilarious accents too.

The woman in the clip above speaks rather fast. Yet, students can get the clue of what accents she is speaking in from the supposed countries she says she is from. The teacher can assign the students to write as many countries/accents they can get from the clip. The teacher can play it twice.

For the clip above, students do not have to guess what accents the man is speaking in because there is a running text explaining them. The teacher might want to assign individual student to imitate a different accent and then have a whole class mingle activity, a role play, in which students have to speak in the accent assigned to them. It will be fun!

The future of work

Pre-int 1, lesson 10 discusses what work will be like in the future. The following clips can serve as useful additional materials complementing the reading text. Teachers can use the shorter clip as a lead-in, while the longer one as a post-reading activity.

The topic for pre-int 1, lesson 13 is music and the Grammy Award. It is certainly interesting for teenage students. But the reading text in the book is rather short and out of date. The up-to-date clips below can be useful and more engaging alternatives to the text from the book. The teachers might want to prepare some activities for the clips.
